Preparing for your Exam
In most cases, if you are getting a plain x-ray, no preparations are required. Preparations for some of the most common diagnostic radiology tests are listed below.
Arthrograms and Joint Injections
If you are taking blood thinners, discontinue use 5 days prior to your exam with physician approval.
Barium Enema
Follow the 24 hour instructions found inside your Fleet Prep Kit, which can be picked up at your pharmacy. Clear liquids only for lunch and dinner the day before your exam. No eating or drinking after midnight. The test will take 30-45 minutes.
Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP)
Take two Dulcolax tablets at 3:00 PM the day before your exam. Clear liquids for dinner and clear liquids up until 9:30 AM on the day of your exam. No eating or drinking after 9:30 AM the morning of your exam. Lab work is required for any patient over the age of 65.
Small Bowel Follow-Through
No eating or drinking after midnight. This exam may take up to four hours to follow contrast through the small intestine.
Upper GI
No eating or drinking after midnight. This test usually takes one hour.
